Today you’ll learn the correct grammar structures for ‘advice’ verbs to use on IELTS.

There are many opportunities to talk about advice on the IELTS Exam: many topics on the Speaking test, General Training letters, and Writing Task 2 essays.

However, the verbs we use to do this are often used with incorrect grammar by candidates.

These verbs are suggest, recommend, and advise.

Below are not every grammar rule associated with these verbs, because you don’t have to know them all!

Just focus on remembering these specific, correct usages, and then you won’t make these mistakes on your next exam.

All of these verbs can be followed by verb-ing

I suggest/recommend/advise putting up a sign.

All of these verbs can be followed by (that) + independent clause.

I suggest/recommend/advise (that) you put up a sign.

Do not put a pronoun after ‘recommend’; it goes at the end of the sentence

I recommend giving the rights to them.

Don’t put ‘me’ after ‘suggest’

He suggested this restaurant to me.

You can put a pronoun after ‘advise’

I advise you to seek counseling as soon as possible.
