Here's a quick video on how to use open strings to play five major scales.

You play the major scale corresponding to what the string is tuned to.
For example if you're on the E string you will be playing the E major scale with this pattern.

Below is the TAB pattern, it works on all the strings (using E string for example):

E--0--2--4--5--7--9--11--12
