Did you know ? According to the data not all California sea lions observed at the dam are eating salmon On the other hand Pinniped Task Force member Bruce Buckmaster equates robbing a bank to sea lions consuming fish out of the Columbia estuary/ where marine mammals have been sustenance fishing for over ten thousand years. Moreover it is simply amazing that the wild salmon were able to survive for twenty million years and hang on just long enough so that Mr. Buckmaster can so called protect and save the fish in his gill & purse seine nets & save fish for 160,000 sport fisher people to kill in zone four and five on the Columbia River while a sea lion eating he considers as--- robbing the bank. Something smells fishey. Over 50% of the historical salmon spawning grounds have been removed from production from the Columbia river estuary and over eight million human animals now call the Columbia River basin home. In addition the surveys shows that not everyone who lives or visits Oregon has the time and desire to kill endangered species for sport & profit--- under the ficitious guise of wild salmon protection and restoration.. The audio for the folks on the phone is not the best so please listen with ear buds ________________________________________________________________------------ This video is an expcerpt from the first day the Pinniped Task Force meet at the Double Tree Hotel in Portland, Oregon on March 01 & 02, 2017 Daryl Bonness, Independant researcher and chairman with the Marine Mammal commission states the data shows clearly that NOT all California sea lions observed at the dam are consuming salmon. In our initial review the data showed very clearly that there were individuals who were at the dam for a single a day, or maybe, even longer that were not observed and were not consuming salmon. So just the notion that just because you are at the dam means you are taking salmon; well maybe -- maybe not. So I think one might loosen the criteria some I am not sure that I would automatically assume that if you are seen at the dam that you are eating salmon. Especially if you are only there for a day and you decide that you are not an effective as a salmon forager and leave. ODFW's Robin Brown states just because an animal is in the trap does not mean he has eaten a salmon. Bob De Long with NMFS states--- possies of small Californa sea lions were seen at the dam the last couple fo years and that does not mean simply that because they are there that they are eating salmon. The US ACOE observer Bjorn K. van der Leeuw says young sea lions leave the area near the dam because they find it is not a good place to hunt.
