Though the modern toilet revolutionized hygiene and sanitation, its novelty and functionality may be flushing precious resources down the drain. As the global population skyrockets and fresh water becomes more scarce, scientists are beginning to develop more efficient and less resource-intensive technologies to manage human waste. From the decades-old composting toilet to a novel coal slurry approach, Science Contributing Correspondent Gretchen Vogel introduces a few promising technologies that may someday find their way into our homes—all part of the 10 August Special Issue on Working With Waste (http://www.sciencemag.org/site/special/waste/).
