A common problem for fisheries is by-catch, or fish caught unintentionally that commonly perish and contribute to global fishery decline. For deep-swimming fish, being pulled to the surface can result in barotrauma, a pressure-related injury that prevents a fish from being able to swim back down to its natural habitat. In this video, researchers from NOAA successfully tag and lower a barotrauma-bloated bocaccio to depth in a camera-equipped cage. The symptoms reverse as it is lowered, and when the door opens at 42.5m below, the fish swims away. Such a process may help manage global by-catch. [CREDIT: N. Wegner and J.
