Post Mortality, functional mortality, selective mortality, and immediate mortality are just a few of the ways that humans categorize the killing of fish.

Sea lions on the Columbia River consumed less than 1% percent of the spring salmon run in 2013. The government has permitted fisheries in the river to harvest up to 17 percent of these same ESA fish not counting the post mortality on catch and release or deaths resulting as by-catch at sea. The government also concluded that 17 percent of adult fish are killed by the 14 dams now on the Columbia River that they must navigate. Yet they say sea lions are the problems. Killing sea lions will not change the future for the salmon.
