In this clip, Pam Klauser talks about one of the activities that gives her joy in her daily life - her art work.

She’s been painting for around fifteen years. As a semi-retired pyschotherapist, art is not what Pam does for a living - but it is an activity that adds a dimension of creativity and passion to her life.

Pam discusses a number of techniques that she uses. With the physical health challenges she faces, she focusses on capturing the spontaneity and life of her subject, rather than an endless process of refining detail aiming for ‘perfection’.

She shows us a recent piece that was commissioned by a neighbour. It’s of a much-loved pet who died. Pam has taken a black and white picture of the dog, and swapped its values for different colours. The method has produced a tender, dreamy portrait of the animal in which its essence is expressed in the colour choice used. This way of working suits Pam’s levels of energy, and her deep love of what colour, shape and juxtaposition offer to a work.

Pam enjoys painting animals, the occasional human, and landscapes. As a Sedona resident and artist, she faces the surprisingly difficult challenge of trying to capture the sheer intensity of the local landscape.

One of the pieces of wisdom an art teacher passed on to her that helps Pam face challenges like this - paint what you imagine, not what you see. This has allowed her to have the freedom to reach for greater artistic freedom and expression.

Art has also helped Pam to to connect with her local community of fellow artists. And of course, she shares this creative journey with her much loved husband, Bill, himself an artist.
