Everything was going fine until I tried a nice sweeping left turn and lost orientation. As a long time fixed-wing flyer, I made a big mistake out of habit.

As I was turning and banking to the left, I lost orientation and whipped the tail around to the left to finish the turn without adding any left cyclic.

The end result was a nose-in heli, which was not that big a deal. However, my first instinct to right the heli was to give it cyclic in the opposite direction that I had entered the turn in...

For a fixed wing, if you bank left, you nearly always bank right to level out. Not so with a helicopter which will maintain original absolute attitude even if you whip the rudder around 180 degrees!

Since the heli had drifted too far away and I couldn't see it, I was baffled when I tried to level the "wings" by adding opposite aileron only to watch the black dot plummet to earth knife-edged!

Lesson to self: If you bank left, then get ahead of yourself and kick the nose around 180 with the rudder to "finish the turn", you must bank left AGAIN to level off correctly.

Crash damage: Main rotor gear stripped, 1 main blade, tail motor, tail rotor. Surprisingly light damage from such a high velocity, nearly upside down crash!
