I went out to fly yesterday. As I headed out to take to the air, the storm clouds in the distance reflected my fears of impending doom: an eventual end to this wonderful hobby.

I would be willing to bet money that NONE of the authors of Oregon Senate Bill 71 have EVER enjoyed flying R/C Aircraft. How can people with zero experience in a field possibly come up with an objective frame of reference in order to govern it, pass laws against it, and ultimately, put people in jail for it?

Why is it that anytime something fun or exciting comes along in this world, the bored lawmakers pounce on a chance to design new laws to criminalize people for it?

R/CFlying has become, if anything, MUCH safer in the last 10 years due to improvements in technology. Digital radio systems, flight stabilization, GPS navigation, autopilots.

I can hit a switch on my plane and my aircraft will turn around and come back to me!

The chances of me running into a light pole, a power line, a house, a person, or anything has been dramatically REDUCED due to the fact that, hey, I have a LIVE CAMERA on my plane now, and can SEE where I am going!

The privacy issue argument is absurd. I could put a camera on a pole and get a MUCH clearer view of my neighbors hot tub than what I could get from my plane passing by. And, there are existing privacy laws which cover this already. Who wouldn't call the police if someone was taking video through a person's window, or in their backyard. This is already covered!

I think there needs to be regulation. Agreed. How about flight lessons and ground schooling certificate requirements? How about age limits? I would even support the idea of a private pilot's license required before being allowed into airspace above 500ft AGL.

But to outlaw an R/C plane with a camera on it and put it's pilot in jail for taking pictures or video?

That is ridiculous, in my opinion...

So, we better get as much flying in as possible before it is outlawed :(
