Six children and two adults were fatally shot by a man who was once in a relationship with the children’s mother at a Texas home on Saturday.

Deputies responded to a request for a welfare check at a home in Houston, Texas at about 9 p.m. on Saturday. Deputies were informed that a man wanted on a warrant for assaulting a one of the residents was inside the house, and officers were instructed to wait for a High Risk Operations Unit to investigate, Harris County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Tim Cannon said in a press conference.

However, one of the deputies spotted the body of a juvenile through a window so deputies forced their way into the home, startling the suspect, 49-year-old David Conley. Conley began shooting and forced the deputies to draw back.

Conley surrendered himself after an hour of negotiation, according to CNN.

Conley, who reportedly had a relationship with one of the victims, discovered on Saturday morning that the locks of the house had been changed after he moved out, according to the arrest affidavit.

He then entered the house through an unlocked window at the back and restrained all eight victims, including six children, with handcuffs and shot them in the back of the head.

The dead have been identified as parents, Dewayne Jackson, 50, his wife Valerie Jackson, 40, and six children, Nathaniel, 13, Dewayne, 10, Honesty, 11, Caleb, 9, Trinity, 7, and Jonah, 6. Nathaniel was believed to be Conley's son from a prior relationship with Valerie.

Conley has been charged with three counts of capital murder and is being held without bond at the Harris County Jail.
