1st track from "Breakin' The Ice" (1979). Another energetic—yet sweetly smooth—funky, disco-influenced tune with hot horns, smokin' guitar, and Truth with a capital "T" from Bryan Duncan & Company! *** Breakin’ The Ice is a classic CCM album from 1978 that features the talents of progressive, jazz/funk masters Bryan Duncan and Randy Thomas (Allies). Sweet Comfort Band took the music industry by storm when their brand of pop and rock didn't sound like a Christian version of any mainstream band. They were sometimes compared to Ides Of March, Little River Band, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, the Doobie Brothers and Hall & Oates…due in large part to Duncan's expressive and soulful voice. Originally released in 1978 on the pioneering Light Records label, Breakin’ The Ice was produced by Bob Wilson of the progressive jazz-funk band, Seawind (how cool is that). The album was rightly described by Bruce Brown (CCM Magazine) as "one of the most legitimate R&B albums ever released." Such high praise for early Christian rock was unheard of and this was an artistic triumph that was fully embraced by the Christian community as the band toured internationally for the next decade. ~gleaned from http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/SweetComfortBand *** By the way, I've always thought SCB's album covers were quite intriguing (well, most of them anyway) but I was surprised to find Breakin' The Ice actually FRAMED AND FOR SALE on Amazon! This according to Artist@Large: "The artist was Kernie Erickson who is a photorealistic oil and acrylics artist based in Orange County... Erickson was certainly at his peak on this piece since there are amazing subtleties (such as the delicately rendered sky) as well as overt, aggressive movement (such as the ice breaker causing thick ice fragments to literally fly off the bow). I remember loving the album cover as much as (or more than) the actual music when this Contemporary Christian Music masterpiece was first released. This isn't just a run of the mill album cover this is art—great art. And for those of us 'who were there' it's art with great memories attached to it." ~ http://www.amazon.com/Sweet-Comfort-Band-Breakin-Limited/dp/B002TKHH3C/ref=sr_1_cc_5?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1422330641&sr=1-5-catcorr&keywords=sweet+comfort+band+breakin+the+ice Well, amen, Artist! I couldn't agree more. BUT I HASTEN TO ADD that the best part of this cover was not on the front but rather on the back, where it was revealed in surreal fashion that below the surface of the ice—you could just barely catch a glimpse of it between the reflective streaks—was a city! A whole city, for goodness sake! With the tops of skyscrapers showing. How cool is that. The intended metaphor is awesome... ~Mimosa
