3rd track from "Welcome Back" (1995). This is a remake of the 8th track from "Love Song" (1972). A Latin rhythm and light jazzy feel characterize this song—ironically born out of an argument over some scritpture with a band member—about unity in the Body of Christ. Now we’re really reaching back! In the early days of CCM it was called Jesus Music, part of the Jesus Movement that began in the late '60s on the West Coast of the United States (members were called Jesus People or Jesus Freaks). And Love Song was a big part of that, coming out of Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel. Their classic debut album, Love Song, is considered one of the greatest Christian music albums of all time (voted #7 by CCM magazine). ~thatMimosaGrove *** Love Song was founded in 1970 by Chuck Girard (vocals and keyboards), Tommy Coomes (guitar and vocals), Jay Truax (bass and vocals), and Fred Field (guitar and vocals). Additionally, the earliest members included David Ingram on keyboards, Ernie Earnshaw on drums, and Jack Schaeffer on bass. It was Schaeffer who came up with the group's name. Denny Correll, formerly of Blues Image, and Carlos Luevano, lead guitarist for Stonehenge band, also worked with the group early on. Field was replaced by Bob Wall, who played guitar on all three albums. Drummer John Mehler, who had joined the fledgling group in its infancy, then left with Field, rejoined in time to play on Final Touch and Feel the Love. Another latter-day member was Phil Keaggy, who joined to replace departing Wall in 1973 but had already left the group before the recording of Final Touch and Feel the Love. ~Wikipedia *** The song Let Us Be One emerged, as Tommy Coomes recalls, out of a disagreement with a fellow band member: "Jay Truax and I were up late one evening having the kind of argument that young Christians often have. He was right. I was right. I remember praying before I fell asleep, 'Lord, if I'm right, why do I feel so bad?' I wound up reading John chapter seventeen for the first time. The prayer of Jesus recorded here is longer than what we call the Lord's Prayer. It's still one of my favorite scriptures, because the lesson of unity was so relevant. I woke up the next morning and apologized to Jay – it didn't matter who was right, it just mattered that I loved my brother. I think I heard something on the radio that day, probably by Carlos Santana, that suggested the Latin rhythm that became the framework for the song. I love rhythm and percussion. I love energy and excitement in music. One person has said that one way to talk to God is to 'Sing our prayers.' That's what 'Let Us Be One' was to me. It's still my prayer because fighting is so natural to us. Every man thinks he is right in his own eyes. It's a big problem. God help us. Make it real." ~ http://one-way.org/lovesong/chuksong.htm *** Please support the artists by buying their awesome music! *** Photos of the band are from Chuck Girard's website: http://www.chuckgirard.com
