Written by City News Service - A suspected car thief escaped today as a sheriff's deputy was trying to handcuff him in Malibu, authorities said. Deputies established a perimeter in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Corral Canyon Road and were hunting for the suspect, according to Deputy Irys Alvarez of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. One person was detained in connection with the case, Alvarez said. According to broadcast reports, she is a woman who was kidnapped by the suspect and who has been transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries. The reported escape occurred shortly before 2 a.m. as a deputy went to investigate a car on the side of the road, according to news photographers at the scene. A deputy was transported around 2:50 a.m. to a hospital for treatment of a hand injury he suffered when he tried to handcuff a suspect, Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatch supervisor Phil Ulloa said.
