First of all, UTC has chosen a new chancellor. UT President Joe DePietro has announced that the three finalists for the job have been narrowed to one: Steve Angle. Angle is senior vice president of Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio. The UT board of trustees will vote on the recommendation at a meeting in Chattanooga tomorrow. DePietro said he doesn't expect any opposition. ______2 Next up, a look at the broad fundraising reach of Chattanooga mayoral candidate Andy Berke. Berke boasts that he is running the largest grass-roots campaign in the history of Chattanooga. In fact, 40 percent of his donors gave 100 dollars or less. But campaign disclosures reveal that at least 40 percent of donors to Berke's campaign live outside the city. Some donors live as far away as Hawaii and Maine. His fundraising also extends across the state to Nashville and Knoxville, and the numbers are staggering. Since his announcement in May, Berke has raised 675 thousand dollars, the most raised for a mayoral run in Chattanooga history. He has spent almost $150 thousand dollars on events, advertising and billboards. Berke's nearest opponent has raised nothing and spent eighteen hundred dollars. ____3 Next up, if you have a motorcycle you might want to pay attention to a bill Tennessee lawmakers plan to take up this week. New legislation would allow motorcycle riders 21 and older to ride without a helmet. Tennessee is currently one of 19 states nationwide that require a helmet for all motorcycle riders. A group of Tennessee's leading health care providers have lined up in opposition, however, arguing that the change will burden taxpayers and lead to more injuries and deaths. ______4 Also on Tennessee's political agenda, it looks like a bill allowing wine sales in grocery stores is finally making headway. Senate committee members have approved the bill on a narrow 5 to 4 vote. The bill still faces substantial hurdles in the Senate Finance Committee, the Senate floor and in the House. Republican Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey has put considerable muscle into supporting the bill. Still, he says he isn't guaranteeing it will pass. ____5 And finally, Lake Winnie is in limbo over tax breaks for its new water park. The family that owns Lake Winnepesaukah was counting on 200 thousand dollars worth of tax breaks during the construction of SoakYa, which opens May 24th. So they were disappointed to learn that the 2011 law that would have granted the break must go back through the legislative process. Park representative Tommy Dickinson says the water park will open on schedule with or without the tax break, but the owners may have to use less-expensive components. ___ And today's weather looks mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain showers and a high near 52. The low tonight will be 35.
