NEW Previously unreleased SLDB observer video from January 27, 2017.

The sea lions were trapped and hot iron branded for the first time in 2017, yesterday, in the East Mooring Basin, Astoria, Oregon, SLDB observers report..

Corrupt federal and state agencies in 2020 now have the permission to shoot California and Steller sea lions in the Columbia River for merely being There is not one piece of peer reviewed literature to support killing sea lions as a means to increase populations of wild salmon and steelhead.

Moreover, peer reviewed literature finds that sea lions are important for maintaining the health and productivity of PNW aquatic habitats. Sea Lions make it possible for PNW aquatic habitats to be able to support large populations of fish such as salmon, anchovies, and sardines. The sealions microbiome are cornerstone in the food web for all life in our rivers and oceans. The sea lion's bring important nutrients up stream to aquatic habitats starved by the dams. Their ecologically important gut flora are is the essential "miracle" grow for phytoplankton) which equals fish food and essential for growing kelp forests that wild salmon and steelhead need to survive.

In addition, sea lions help protect the wild salmon's genetics and DNA by weeding out the weak, sick and the state's genetically inferior hatchery fish which is quite the opposite of the relationship that hatchery fish have with wild salmon in the Columbia River estuary.. Hatchery fish are known to weaken the genetics and alter the very DNA of the wild salmon in just one life-cycle. Peer reviewed literature supports that sea lions are important to the health and productivity of the PNW ecology and that removing them from their habitats causes more harm to wild fish than good. Trophic cascades shows us that predator removal programs do not work no matter how much money is spent on them because there will always be another predator that will move in and fill the niche of the removed species. Currently there is plenty of evidence to support removing the four lower dams on the Snake River and open up 140 plus miles of a free flowing Snake and return some free lowing cold water below 68* into the Columbia River to increase the odds of survival.

it is human greed that scapegoats' and kills sea lions. The war on sea lions is driven by human greed not wild salmon protection and recovery efforts. Oregon, Washington and Idaho killing sea lions undermines the health and productivity of the Columbia River estuary, Scapegoating and killing sea lions ignites Trophic Cascades and removing sea lions from the Columbia River estuary to the Bonneville Dam undermines the health and balance of the PNW ecology--- eroding any chance for increasing healthy populations of wild salmon'. The public's billion dollar investment in wild salmon and wild salmon habitat in the Columbia River estuary is undermined by this violent-corrupt and greedy policy.

Altogether, healthy wild salmon swim faster than sea lions do and Mother Nature designed them this way. It is only the human species that predates on the biggest and the strongest salmon for sport while humans clear cut the PNW forests and degrade and remove from production aquatic habitats that wild salmon and steelhead need to survive, not the sea lions..

Therefore the violent scapegoating and killing agencies must embrace the peer reviewed science from the 21 century and must be forced to climb out and away from their archaic primordial and violent ooze that is if we are ever going to be be successful in our recovery efforts to increase wild salmon and steelhead populations and restore the aquatic habitats that they need to survive..
