West African forces have freed 5,000 people who were being held in villages along the Nigeria-Cameroon border by Boko haram. It follows an operation that saw more than 60 fighters killed. Several militant hideouts were also destroyed. According to Cameroon the first contingent of prisoners have already been taken across the border to the Nigerian refugee camp of Banki. Many of them are women and children. A coordinated push by the militaries of Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger has dismantled much of the territory Boko Haram once held. The group though still remains capable of launching lethal attacks, often targeting the civilian population.
