Ancient Roman city of Herculaneum Italy Mount Vesuvius Day Tour of Unesco World Heritage Site Just about 5 miles south of Naples Italy is the Ancient Roman city of Herculaneum which was buried in ash by Mount Vesuvius in 76 AD. Only about 25% of the city has been uncovered so far, and thankfully is in much better shape than nearby Pompeii. It is estimated that about 86 feet of ash fell on Herculaneum and that while once located on the Mediteranian sea it is now about 2 miles inland. When you arrive here you have to walk down a ramp to get down to the ancient city and then it hits you, just how much debris fell here. I took a tour with a guide from the Norwegian Cruise Line as I was a passanger on the Norwegian Jade. It was about 3 hours or so and it is just a great way to see and be informed about this UNESCO World Heritage Site. If I ever get the chance I will go back to see it again. It's just amazing to see 2000 year old hand painted artwork still on the walls of some of the villas here. The streets are dead straight and still cobble stoned plus the drainage system onder the streets is still working since it was cleaned out by the archeologists many years ago. You have to come here people and see this place for yourself it's awesome. Please support my new Youtube channel Travelling with Bruce by visiting my Patreon page and making a monthly contribution.
