After seeing too many preventable heart attacks, he went to Johns Hopkins to learn Preventive Medicine. While there, he went on the run the post-graduate training program (residency) in Preventive Medicine. From there, he made a career of practicing and managing preventive medicine and primary care clinics. His later role in this area was Chief Medical Officer for Premise, which has close to 1,000 primary care/prevention clinics. He was also the Chief Medical Officer for MDLIVE, the second largest telemedicine company. More recently, he founded PrevMed, a heart attack, and stroke prevention clinic. At PrevMed, we focus on heart attack, stroke, and cognitive decline. We serve patients who have already experienced an event as well as those who have not developed a diagnosis or event. Dr. Brewer provides services via telemedicine or in person if you're in the Lexington, KY area. We find a lot of undiagnosed Pre-Diabetes or Insulin Resistance. Treating unrecognized risk factors like Pre-Diabetes allows reduction of risk and prevention of disease. Isabella Wentz and Suzy Cohen have written books on Hashimoto's Thyroiditis with a major link to Gluten in the diet. We look at the science behind these assertions. Dr. Allesio Fasano, the founder of the Center for Celiac Research at Massachusetts General (Harvard), has done a lot of the research in this area. His major focus has been Leaky Gut and Celiac Disease. The process described is impact of cell membrane receptors like PAR3, EGFr. These receptors, in turn, change the cellular tight junctions. These tight junctions have critical function for the intestinal mucosa, but also many other membranes - such as the thyroid membrane. In fact, this tight junction breakdown has been associated with multiple auto-immune diseases: lupus, schizophrenia, type 1 diabetes, cv inflammation (heart attack, stroke, dementia), rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Haptoglobin 2,2 has a precursor protein called zonulin. Zonulin is a genetic variation of haptoglobin, located on chromosome 16, the same chromosome linked to the auto-immune and inflammatory diseases mentioned above. Diabetes with a HgA1C of 6.5 or greater AND hap 2,2 have a huge increase in CV risk. This comes from a combined oxidation effect of Glycation of hemaglobin and the difficulty in clearing it due to challenges with haptoglobin 2,2 configuration. We'll cover that in other videos.
