CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A man has been arrested for allegedly being involved in the federal moving company scam from July. More than 900 people have been victims of a moving company scam that charged very little and then held items hostage until people paid a high price. One victim from the Tri-state area named Elise Martin said, "I went to give him a credit card, and he was like, 'No.' I was like, 'But that's my stuff.' They're like, 'You have to give me cash.' And he demanded I give him $4,000 in cash. The original quote that I got was for $4,500. When they came to load me, they required more money. So, my $4,500 move, by the time it was all said and done, cost me over $10,000." The company operated in nine states including Ohio, over five years. The companies operated principally out of a business address in Hollywood, Florida and they had a warehouse in West Chester. Serghei Ivan Verlan was arrested outside the country and is currently detained Butler County Jail waiting for the US Marshals. The court found that Seghei fled the country when he found out about the criminal charges he potentially faced. The pending count he currently faces is a conspiracy to participate in racketeering activity.
