This is a rare find! It's a Mark X Medical Tricorder hero prop built, assembled and painted by Federation Surplus back in 2007 before they went out of business. I got this from eBay recently and it had quite a few issues with it. Bottom line is, I had to remove a few things to fix them, sand off all the paint down to the primer, re-putty and shape the putty (meticulous sanding), re-prime, re-paint (4 coats), wet sand and then re-apply all the graphics and hardware. It think it came out pretty good. My favorite part of this Tricorder is how the closing ratchet sound is apparently separate from the other sounds...possibly a separate soundboard altogether. No other Tricorder I have built or owned would repeat the sound again and again the way this one does. Normally, if the closing ratchet sound goes off but you DON'T close the door all the way (so the lights stay on) the closing ratchet sound will never play again by closing the door again. Normally once the closing ratchet sound is engaged, it shuts off all sounds until you completely close the door (shutting off the lights and disengaging the reed switch) and open it up again. This one is very unique! Furthermore, because of this feature, you can open the door and start closing it right away to only hear the ratchet sounds and it never gets mistimed or thrown off course, so to speak. The normal Tricorder electronics you can't do this to every time. Most of the time, you don't get the closing sound if you do it this fast and also when you open it back up, you'll hear the sound loop is mistimed a bit at the beginning. I had always asked for this feature to be in the electronics I had made for me when I was building these props and everyone told me it couldn't be done. The feature on this Tricorder makes it act very realistically, which is what I always wanted!
