IELTS Grammar: Don’t Mess Up These Count/Noncount Nouns

Today’s rules are most important for Writing Task 2, but I’ve also seen students make these mistakes on their Listening Exams. Today’s grammar errors are SO COMMON with IELTS test-takers around the world- don’t let yourself be one of them! These nouns are uncountable: ✪ Research ✪ Information ✪ Advice ✪ Knowledge ✪ Children (This is slightly different- it’s a ‘group noun’- but, I still see students adding an ‘s’ when they shouldn’t!) Don’t add an ‘s’ to those nouns. Don’t put an article (a or an) before them. You can put ‘the’ before the noun if it’s the second time you are mentioning it. Furthermore, many students are using the phrase ‘a lot of’, and this is easy and boring. Don’t use it! Say: ✪ A great deal of ✪ A considerable amount of ✪ A massive amount of Also, don’t use ‘much/many’. They’re easy, and many students make grammar mistakes with them.
