SLDB observers capture video of a group of teenagers that clearly go out of their way to harass some sea lions lying on a dock in the East Mooring Basin in Astoria, Oregon 4/26/ 2015. These humans can be seen approaching extremely close, spitting, swinging their arms towards the sea lions and eventually flushing the animals from the docks and into the water. It is so beautiful how the sea lions react to these hooligans. So often in the media sea lions are depicted as vicious wild animals that will eat your baby. While this video clearly shows which species between the two is menacing and which species actually goes out of their way to harass others. The actions of these teenagers depicts an attitude of callous disrespect towards these animals which stems from the current hate being unjustly flung towards these animals by the big media. And the fact that Oregon participates in the lethal take program which it is Sea Lion Defense Brigade's opinion that this bad policy encourages bad behavior and violence to be directed towards these animals by those inclined to do so. Because some humans think that if Uncle Sam can hurt and kill sea lions for eating fish then by God that they can do it too. **** This incident could have resulted in very serious injuries for either party if the media depiction of these animals as vicious were true. It these humans would have been bitten then whose fault would it have been ? This video depicts the almost daily harassment the sea lions endure from humans in the EMB in Astoria. This is just one out of many reasons as to why SLDB observers are there to document and to lend a voice to show what these animals have to go through in regards to having to share the planet with the human species. **** The sea lions in Oregon are unjustly scapegoated, menaced, and killed for simply trying to survive, and the Columbia River estuary has always been their home. The sea lions really need their own alternative haul out space in the EMB so that they can seek respite and not be harassed by such menacing and potentially dangerous human creatures. The sea lions are an important part of the Pacific Northwest ecology and a huge attraction for visitors from all around the world. The sea lions need more protection in Oregon/Washington not less. We all deserve a safe place to sleep and safe place that we can call home. If you observe anyone harassing a sea lion so to cause it serious injury or death please call the NOAA 24 HOUR HOT LINES 1- 800- 853-1964.
