INTERVIEW: 2018 a year of mixed fortunes for Kenya's retailers

Kenya's wholesale & retail sector grew at 7.7% in the second quarter of 2018, hitting levels of growth last seen in 4 years ago, when the sector was still deep in a slump. 2018's first half continues the recovery for a retail sector whose growth rates were in constant decline between 2010 and 2016, but there are challenges ahead. 2 years have passed since Kenyan legislators imposed rate caps that have strangled lending to the private sector, but for some large retailers, that's not stopped them from expanding. Earlier, I spoke to the COO of Naivas, Willy Kimani, as he pointed out, the retail chain has learned to expand, debt free.
