WEST CHESTER, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- A school district that seen its share of budget cuts is delivered a blow from Ohio Governor John Kasich's office. Under his proposed budget, the Lakota School District would lose millions. After finally approving a tax levy a year and a half ago, the Lakota School District restored some budget cuts. Now Governor Kasich wants to cut state funding to the district and that basically boils down to two steps forward and three steps back.Kelley Casper was one of the many volunteers who worked hard in 2013 to win passage of a Lakota school tax levy. They celebrated the first levy win in eight years. Some budget cuts were restored, some new things were added. But now Ohio Governor Kasich is proposing a .9 million funding cut over the next two years for the Lakota district. By contrast, the Indian Hill District will receive a 21 percent increase. The Kasich proposal would be million less than what Lakota forecasted it would get in state funding in 2016; more than million less in 2017. District spokesman Randy Oppenheimer said the funding roller coaster makes it tough to plan. The levy passage allowed the district to reduce the amount student athletes pay to play. Building security was improved. Now more cuts are a real possibility. That concerns parents and homeowners like Kelley Casper."If we keep cutting things and we can't get people to move in to the district and it will affect my property values. So it does affect me as a parent even with my kids finishing up at Lakota," said Casper. And Casper said parents will fight Columbus over the funding cuts like they fought hard to win passage of a tax levy. School leaders as well as parents plan to talk to state legislators and launch a letter writing campaign in hopes of reducing proposed cuts. Monday, Feb. 9, Local 12 News will look at a district that will gain under the governor's proposed plan and it's in one of the wealthiest ZIP codes in the country.Follow Larry Davis on Twitter @larrydaviswkrc, and LIKE him on Facebook.
