Erika Pearce and colleagues challenge previous ideas about T cell metabolism by showing that activated T cells switch from oxidative phosphorylation to aerobic glycolysis not to promote proliferation but instead to augment the production of the antimicrobial protein IFN-γ, which is regulated by the glycolytic enzyme GAPDH.
