Expansion of Botswana power plant delayed by dispute with contractors

The expansion of two units at Botswana's Morupule B power plant has been delayed due to a dispute with the contractor. Japan's Marubeni and South Korea's Posco Energy were awarded the contract last year for the expansion of the 300 megawatt station. But the two firms and Botswana's government have to blows over an 800 million dollar guarantee. Energy Minister Sadique Kebonang, says work was due to get under way in January. However, the contractors demanded the payment of the sovereign guarantee, due to worries the loss-making Botswana Power Corporation failed to pay up. Kebonang says that only Parliament, which is in recess until July, can approve such a payment.
