12/06/17 Pacific Lamprey Summit Federal and State agencies along with CRITFC, California biologists, dam operators and pacific Lamprey nerds converge in Portland, Oregon for three days to discuss Pacific Lamprey and their habitat. Thanks for watching! SLDB 2017 Did you Know? ODFW not that long ago considered Pacific lamprey a nuisance species that predate on salmon and so ODFW from 1940-1980 poisoned the Pacific Lamprey from the Columbia River basin for eating salmon. Pacific Lamprey are 450 million years old and they are key stone species in the bioregion and these fish set up the whole ecological foundation to support ALL fresh water fish in the CRS. yet ODFW still poisoned them. It is evident that ODFW ought to review all important native non human predators that ODFW are currently claiming a "nuisance" because as with the pacific lamprey this agency waging war on the pacific lamprey to merely appease the emotional please of fishermen whom claimed pacific lamprey were eating to many of their salmon. As history shows ODFW was WRONG! Therefore it is time for state and federal agencies, CRITFC and dam builders to STOP scapegoating sea lions, wild salmon and pacific lamprey in the Columbia River estuary. Now is the time to focus on habitat , water quality and quantity over waging war on important native predators if we are serious about protecting wild fish and their habitats.
