~~ Review Script ~~
This 100-minute Don Scardino comedy film sees Steve Carell as washed up Las Vegas magician eager to climb his way back into the spotlight, and repair some broken relationships along the way. Released on March 15, 2013, it's likely the 30-million-dollar budget will be recouped, but despite the big-name talent in this picture, it's unlikely to earn much more than that. Bragging that he has the "biggest bed in Vegas", Carell is consistently safe in the leading role, and only momentarily shows signs emotion as the obliviously misogynistic, but occasionally determined illusionist. The cast includes Steve Buscemi turning in a rare, but amusing comedy performance (who exits the picture far too soon), Olivia Wilde as a sexy assistant who dreams of more, James Gandolifini as a blunt, but friendly hotel owner, Alan Arkin as the elderly showman and mentor who undergoes an impressive make-up transformation, and Jim Carrey returning to his comedy-roots as a zany street performer a-la "Chris Angel'... but far more irresponsible. But even his limited role, which serves up more pointless jokes than any real tension for the protagonists - wasn't even to make this picture stand out. Produced under the advisement of real-life Vegas stage magician David Copperfield, the illusions in this picture rarely dazzle or amaze as they might in real life: used here instead as an extension of the character's inner struggles and issues.  Unsure of its own tone, this PG-13 picture bounces from bizarre and unbelievable gag-comedy, like one performer drilling a hole into his own skull, to a serious conversation about rediscovering one's passion in life. Unfortunately, Scardino isn't able to pull these turns off effectively, and the picture's uneven pacing and treatment is the biggest flaw. There aren't any surprises or disappointments in the technical categories: the cinematography, editing, sound, and music is all decently accomplished, but never noteworthy. The predictable plot has a few moments of genuine humor, especially a decidedly non-majestic reveal of the picture's biggest trick during the epilogue. Although I'd hardly classify this as a actual "disappointment", given the high-caliber cast, I was definitely hoping for a funnier, and more memorable adventure. Instead, we're left with a ho-hum dramedy that never has anything important to say. "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone", "Slightly amusing, but offers little."
