Our story follows Stiller, who is the building manager of a fictional luxury skyscraper, which in reality is just the Trump Tower on Central Park West. Things become complicated with Alda's character, a not-so-subtle representation Bernie Madoff, is placed under house arrest by the FBI for running a ponzi scheme. Unfortunately for Stiller and his co-workers at The Tower, Alda lost all of their pension funds too - so now they're determined to steal it back from his penthouse apartment, where apparently, he has $20-million stashed away somewhere. Although billed a comedy, rarely are there any laughs after the first 15 minutes of this movie - which is much more similar in tone to Ocean's 11 a typical Ben Stiller comedy. With that light-hearted approach in-mind, this film's mammoth cast do a terrific job bouncing off one another, Broderick and Murphy both give great performances, reminding us all how talented they were back in the 80's. Meanwhile, Alda is positively charming and simultaneously despicable as the villain, turning in a really fun and memorable performance. Although overly formulaic in it's setup, and particularly slow with it's delivery -- once Tower Heist arrives at it's titular scene though, things really start to click. The first two-thirds of this movie may be fun, but they're also boring - it's suspenseful and serious final act that truly delivers. It's a high-stakes, and high-tension sequence that has our protagonists dangling 60-stories above New York's Columbus Circle, fighting for their lives, while still trying to take back what's rightfully theirs. More effective as a dramatic heist picture than a comedy, it's the great acting from the entire cast that successfully sells this concept. Void of any big surprises or twists, this film doesn't quite reach the iconic levels of the aforementioned Oceans 11 series, but it is decently memorable. "Tower Hiest", a "Surprisingly tense action, with jokes". ~
