For one piece of time-lapse we filmed, we used three different devices to experiment which was the best and easiest to work with. 

Thanks to Apps like FrameLapse (Android) HyperLapse (Apple), and LapseIt (both Android and Apple), time-lapse is easy to set up on your mobile device. They are also easily customisable and user-friendly. 

Older DSLR's do not include time-lapse options. But newer cameras, especially mirrorless cameras have customizeable time-lapse options. There are so many awesome DSLR and mirrorless camera time-lapse videos on YouTube, they look so good with a professional camera. 

GoPro's were always great for time-lapse, just sometimes a pain to edit. Starting with the GoPro Hero 4 series though, time-lapse photography options are included internally. This makes it way easier.  The wide-angle view of a GoPro make big panoramas of moving skies and transforming landscapes possible to capture.

While some devices allow a final cut of your time-lapse to be 24p (24 frames or pictures per second of viewing), many, even the GoPro, has a default of 30 frames per second. So, if you have your device set to take a picture every second, you will need to film for one minute to have two seconds of time-lapse. If you have a picture taken every minute, one hour will give you 2 seconds of footage. If you are doing quick montages of time-lapse, around 2-4 seconds is generally recommended.
