European Union leaders offered their African counterparts aid and better access to Europe at a migration summit in Malta on Thursday, signing a trust fund which puts forward 1.8 billion euros in aid . With Europe's attention now gripped by over half a million Syrians and others, whose arrival has plunged the EU into crisis, memories have faded of the drowned Africans whose deaths in April prompted the Malta summit. EU leaders hope that by offering aid, visas and cheaper remittance costs, their African counterparts will in return help curb chaotic migration across the Mediterranean. Several African leaders were however seemingly not impressed with the deal, pointing out that while the amount is significant, it is still not sufficient to combat the ongoing migrant crisis.
