A time-lapse movie of metaphase during meiosis I through cytokinesis in a primary spermatocyte of the crane-fly Nephrotoma suturalis. Images were acquired with a liquid crystal polarized light microscope (LC-PolScope) that reveals microtubules as birefringent structures in cells without antibody labeling or special staining regimens. Here, one look up table ("green fire blue") of ImageJ was used to colorize the images; this gives the extremely birefringent structures (e.g., microtubular spindle fibers) a bright yellow appearance, while less birefringent structures appear green to blue. The background is nearly black because it is not birefringent.
