i was driving along, when i noticed this momma Cow, in a field having a baby, so i stopped the car. i stayed with her to make sure that she and her baby would be all right. Which i was very thankful she was-- i felt luckily to witness such an amazing feat of nature, and of course i wanted to document the experience. Maybe, this might change somebody's mind about eating animals?
I was concerned for the baby being born right before nightfall. Of course it is in freezing weather, and with no real barn or no warm bed of hay on site for them to take shelter to. There was though a three sided structure which, i guess, is better than what the male cows, across the street get, which is absolutely, no shelter at all. Which leaves them with no escape from Oregon's pounding, cold, rain. i can't help to worry about these animals left standing in the rain-- all night long-- in freezing temperatures as i lay in my warm room at night. Some say i should not worry, or that cows have thick coats, or it is common practice, but that is the problem here isn't it? It is a huge problem and far to common that farm animals are treated like objects or depicted as dumb that they would not have the common sense to move out of the rain. But i know this is not true. i know that if these cows had a warm barn to retreat to they would.
I personally feel if you are going to have domesticated animals, especially a brand new baby calf, or adult cows for that matter-- the Guardian of these animals should have to provide some kind of warm shelter. People tell me cows in Montana drop their calves in the snow. --i personally, would not leave my dog outside in that weather to have her babies, and nor would i leave my cow outside in the snow or rain to have hers. I am sure the cow does not want to be dropping her calf in a snow pile, in a rain puddle, or on some on cold concrete floor. i am sure if the rancher desires to escape the cold, freezing, rainy, weather then-- i bet, so does this new baby calf.

i feel lucky to capture this footage and share it with you--it was very special experience for all of us there.I hope you are touched as i am by the caring support the other cows provided while the Momma cow has her contractions. I hope you enjoy to witness how extremely, affectionate cows are, and witness how much they love, and care for each other, and the compassion they all share for the Momma cow while she gives birth, and we can all welcome the new baby--i wish to a peaceful, happy world. Please do not eat them.--11/27/12
