Maysville police searching for woman using fake money

MAYSVILLE, Ky. (WKRC) - At first glance, the two $100 bills probably look real to many people, but they're counterfeit. Surveillance video shows a woman in a blonde wig who workers say paid with phony money.

Investigators believe she is buying small items with the fake cash and getting change in the form of real currency.

Police say a worker at Sally Beauty Supply figured out pretty quickly that the bill she was handed was a fake.

"By the time she had realized it, the female had already had some change. She had brought items up to purchase. She had change in hand and so she made off with the items and the money," Detective Chris Conley said.

At Penn Station, the same woman was spotted passing a phony bill. A local bank's counterfeit security measures detected it.

Conley said, "Our officers indicated that it was a counterfeit bill by just a watermark and it would smear. It also appeared to have uneven border on the bill, so that appearance of it felt also like paper. It didn't have any kind of security measure with the bill."

Police are checking into a possible connection at Family Dollar and Rue 21.

Officers say the woman appears to be in her 30's or 40's. She's about 5-feet-8-inches" and roughly 150 pounds. Investigators want businesses in the area to pay close attention to the bills they get.

Conley has some advice for businesses: "Just make sure that not only are we checking with the counterfeit pens for good measure, but just take a good look at the bill and what you're seeing and see if it looks and feels correct."
