These defense mechanisms defend against the original wound and can take many shapes and sizes. For example, overeating, smoking, alcohol/drug abuse, porn, shopping, and even OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) can act as defense mechanisms against human pain and suffering. Although some defense mechanisms are healthy such as exercise, eating right, and good boundaries to keep out the bad, many defense mechanisms end up taking from you more than protecting you in the long run. Eating you from the inside out, they trap you into a dungeon of limitations and stunt your growth. By cleaning out the original wound, we can then more comfortably let go of these defense mechanisms as we find that we have nothing to defend against in the hear and now.
