The Kaiser Permanente Sickle Cell Center of Excellence program at the Inglewood Medical Office leads the way in the advanced treatment of sickle cell anemia, an inherited disorder in which red blood cells are abnormally shaped into elongated “sickle” or “C-shaped” forms. This debilitating disease affects one in 500 African-American newborns annually. Given that the Inglewood clinic’s African-American population is 40%, a comprehensive sickle cell program is very important. As the only Kaiser program of its kind in the Southern California Region, this multi-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and social services, take a comprehensive approach to the treatment of more than 500 patients.
