The sea lions have an important job to do. • The sea lions help the keep the genetic strength of the wild fish strong and they aid in bio diversity of the Columbia River habitat. The sea lions help create the lushness of phytoplankton which are the cornerstone of the food chains for all life in the ocean(1). In addition the sea lions, seals and other marine mammals help feed and assist with fish distribution throughout the Columbia River basin. Moreover the science supports the importance of non human predators and key stone species in the Pacific Northwest bio -region, and that removing them the empirical evidence shows causes more harm than good(2). Therefore it is a detriment and undermines the relationships that support healthy ecosystems which sustains fisheries on the Columbia River. Historians note that the Columbia River Estuary has always been home to sea lions, and other marine mammals. The Columbia River Estuary extends 146 miles from the mouth of the Columbia River to the Bonneville Dam ( USACOE). On another note Sea lions are the victims of many horrible menacing and violent hate crimes. Moreover violent acts against animals are considered recognized as indicators of a disease of the psyche that is not limited to animals(3).• In addition it has been recognized that there are strong links between cruelty to animals and violence towards people. Moreover it is the Science that is quicker to change than bad policy. Unfortunately, such as the sea lion “lethal” take program which has been documented can lead to “vigilante” type behavior which has led to abuse & violence to be inflicted upon the sea lions by those inclined to do so(5). The empirical evidence shows that marine top predators play a critical role in maintaining both ocean health and global climate (6), and smart fishermen know that blaming sea lions will not save the salmon (7). Moreover these aquatic beings and the oceans support and sustain life(8) and the sea lions are known as an indicator species. Their health is a direct reflection of the over all health of the environment(9). The mass die offs of California Sea lions along the west coast worries researchers about its implications for humans and for all life in the Pacific Ocean(10). ___________________________________________________________- Source: 1. http://tidelines.org/columns/scoop-pinniped-poop-0 2. http://tinyurl.com/nmr77v9 3.http://tinyurl.com/n7mwg7v 4. http://tinyurl.com/ph89zje 5.http://tinyurl.com/qhn4vn5 6. https://youtu.be/M18HxXve3CM 7. http://tinyurl.com/pkt4nza 8. https://youtu.be/eH1s9GCqPKo 9. http://tinyurl.com/phw9yse 10. http://tinyurl.com/9qwfan2
