The Government Shut Down – Planned Parenthood bill explained

Federal agencies will run out of money this week, on Thursday October 1, which means the United States – the richest country in the world – won’t be able to pay it’s bills. 

What that means is that anyone paid by the Government, including people who work at federally funded museums, national parks, monuments, and basically everyone in Washington DC will be told to stay home - and may or may not be paid. 

But Republicans in the House don’t care.  THEY KNOW the country is desperate, and THEY KNOW that a shut down is disasters. SO they’re using this as an opportunity to pass laws that wouldn’t normally pass. 

The main law they are trying to force through is a law to taking funding from Planned Parenthood. 

The reason they don’t like Planned Parenthood is because PP performs abortions. But no Federal money is ever used for abortions, so they can’t just pass a law to stop funding abortions. 

To hit Planned parenthood, Republicans have to stop all funding for all the other stuff, like cancer screenings, STD checks, and contraception.  They’re cutting their funding for healthcare people need, hoping that planned parenthood will have to close some of the clinics, and that means it will be more difficult to find a place to have an abortion. 

Why the sudden interest in planned parenthood?
Because the anti abortion group the center for medical progress released a video. It’s shocking - but medical procedures are always shocking. 

If you want to stop abortions – go ahead and try. But do it by passing a law. Don’t shut down the entire country to force through legislation we wouldn’t otherwise allow in this country.
