A concerned subscriber sent in this question: How can I prevent going bald? What treatments out there are effective?? We did a sciq investigation to find out!

Male pattern baldness affects 2 out of 3 men by age 60! It’s is caused by a problem called "hair follicle miniaturization" – where the hair follicle shrinks and deteriorates until it can’t support the hair. The main thing that triggers the hair follicle to deteriorate is dihydrotestosterone, also known as DHT.
So how can we stop DHT fro working it’s magic?

Finasteride (also known as Proscar) is the main known drug treatment used for male pattern baldness. Like it’s sister drug Dutasteride, it works by blocking production of DHT.

STUDIES SUGGEST the treatment results in about 30% improvement in hair loss after six months of treatment, and effectiveness only persists as long as the drug is taken.

You may have also heard of Minoxidil, aka Rogaine. It’s a nonprescription medication which is rubbed into the scalp. Rogaine has been proven effective, but sadly not in 100% of cases.

The longer the hair has stopped growing, the less likely the treatment will work. And it must be used indefinitely... sorry guys!
