Local Korean War vets honored and remembered in Evendale

EVENDALE, Ohio (WKRC) - The Korean war is called the forgotten war. But in Evendale Friday, a group of local veterans were remembered and across the nation. Their fellow comrades who never came home are being remembered too.

These are the faces of the Cincinnati soldiers who served our country halfway around the world. Back in 1950, they were young men stationed in Korea and fighting for freedom. 

Today, their faces have aged but their pride is unwavering. 

“I think it's a great occasion," Henry Merrick, an Air Force veteran, said. "I think it'll be great for the American families, a comforting thing to know that their loved ones rest on American soil."

Merrick was one of many veterans honored Friday in Evendale by the Urology Group and GE Aviation. This ceremony marks the 65th anniversary of the signing of the cease-fire in the three-year battle. 

But Friday was especially meaningful as some of their fallen comrades are finally coming home. 

"There was no reason to hold them; the war was over," Richard Baines said. "They should have released them right away."

A plane carrying the remains of 55 US servicemen was flown out of North Korea Friday. It happened based on an agreement in June between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un. 

It's a move Bud Annenberg had been waiting years for. 

"When I left there in '53, I was hoping there would be a settlement, but it didn't come to pass," Annenberg said. "I was hoping it would happen after that but the North Koreans were very stubborn."

Annenberg served in the Army's medical battalion. He worked to save lives, but it was a fight not often won.

It's estimated the war killed 36,000 American soldiers. Of those who died, the US Department of Defense estimates North Korea still has the remains of 5,300 US servicemen. 

The White House released a statement saying this is a significant first step and they hope to resume field operations to search for others still missing.
