Welcome to the first edition of One Minute News from One Minute Economics, a format through which I cover the most important events of the week(-ish) from an economic perspective:

1) The referendum in Turkey, through which the Turkish voters (51.4% - 48.6%) agreed to let the president expand his powers. In my opinion, the results of the Turkish referendum is truly troublesome as even if concerns about voter fraud and what not are perfectly legitimate, the referendum in Turkey made it clear yet again that in times of economic turmoil, people tend to gravitate towards authoritarian leaders

2) The UK snap elections. Now sure, the fact that snap elections will be taking place in the United Kingdom or if you will the fact that UK citizens will be voting sooner than expected can be considered political mumbo-jubo. But the UK snap elections, on top of everything else going on in the world, has me quite worried as an economist

3) the rising tensions with North Korea. Once again, tensions with North Korea are not uncommon and this event wouldn't trouble me as much in and of itself but in today's environment, rising tensions with North Korea reinforce some of my economic fears... among other things
