Here is a short video of the Roma tomato plant I purchased from the Damascus H.S. Future Farmers of America plant sale in Mount Airy, Maryland on May 20, 2009.  I apologize for the darkness of the video - YouTube always makes the videos darker than they really are.  This video was taken on August 9, to give you an idea of how long it took to get the first red, ripe tomato.  The plantings were raised in the Damascus H.S. greenhouse by the FFA chapter there.  (Remember, they are the only FFA chapter in all of Montgomery County).  Then it was up to me to stumble my way through the summer, trying to grow tomatoes for the first time.  Here you can see the results of a small effort to support Montgomery County agriculture, and the future farmers of Montgomery County in Damascus, Maryland.  But if we don't have the government leadership to revive and sustain a viable agricultural economic sector, those future farmers won't have the opportunities past county farmers had.  That is where all of us as county residents have to get involved.
