If you already have a lot of poles for your horse jumps you might want to add some different pieces of equipment to keep things different, or to add some interest to your jumps.

One way to do that is to make some raised poles for your riding arena. They are really easy to make, and add a lot of impact to making the jump appear more 'solid' for your horse, as well as making it clear which direction you go over the jump.

You can also use these for flat work or if you are just getting started with jumping because they are great to add a little bit of height to ground rails to keep your horse lifting his feet.

To make a set of raised rails you will need:
(3) pieces of wood that is 3 foot long, I used landscaping timber remnants that I had lying around.
(6) pieces of 2x4 scrap that is about 6"- 8" long each
Primer paint (I use Kilz2)
Exterior paint (I use Rustoleum oil based paint, it works wonderful)
Wood glue
3" Decking screws
Paint brushes
Drill

This will give you an overall length of 9 feet, which is perfect for jumps that are both 8' and 10' long.
If you build 2 sets, you would have 3 pair of "rail raisers"to get your rails up off the ground for flat work.
You might have scrap wood laying around that you could make a few sets of these in a weekend. They are a wonderful training addition that you can make quickly and easily. If you add these raised rails to your jumps as ground poles, you can save the poles and use them for your jumps.
