CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (WKRC) - Chase Northcutt is small but mighty.

On Wednesday, Chase helped load donated socks into a car to give to people experiencing homelessness.

The first-grader, with his big smile that's missing a front tooth, answered a question with innocence only a child can have.

"I started in 2014. I mean in 16, and I like collecting socks for the homeless," Chase said.

Chase started collecting socks for people experiencing homelessness after his parents challenged him to come up with a way to give back.

His mother, Suzanne Northcutt, said, "It's what you want for your kids. You want them to care about others. You want them to realize that not everybody has what you have and to see him starting to get that at an early age, it just melts your heart."

Chase calls his efforts "Socks Rock". So far this year, he has collected roughly 3,000 pairs of socks. With his parents' help, Chase collected at his school, from family and friends and by using social media.

This year, Chase is teaming up with Maslow's Army. The non-profit advocates for the homeless. The founder, Samuel Landis, and his wife, Susan, presented Chase with an award for his work in the community.

Sam said, "I spent over 20 years living out on the street and socks are such an essential necessity. You have to take care of your feet out there, especially in this cold weather."

Sam and Susan both know what it's like, especially around the holidays.

"I usually spent Christmas Eve and Christmas just walking up and down downtown Cincinnati, just seeing if anybody was out to say 'Merry Christmas' to just so I could get someone to say 'Merry Christmas' back to me," Sam said.

What started as a service project is now part of Chase's character. He understands the importance of giving and of treating strangers with kindness.

"It feels good. It feels really good," Chase said with a big smile. "They don't probably have any socks, but they will by me this year."

If anyone is interested in donating, the Crestview Hills Town Center has bins set up. They're located in the shopping center's main office by the store, Charming Charlie.
