Organization Channeling Youth Through Music

by Alyssa Spirato One local organization is channeling Chattanooga's youth through music."The Future Is Ours" initiative encourages children to stay off the streets and companies around them are stepping in to make it happen.The organization was part of the Sister Expo Saturday, where hundreds had a chance to showcase their music and come together as a community."It's a real testament that we can come together as a community, and put on an event and do something really, really nice," says Keith Landecker, Operations Manager for Brewer Media. But parts of Saturday's event wasn't just about performing. It has a deeper meaning that has Chattanooga's youth in mind. It all started with a concept from Chattanooga Parks and Recreation and the Gang Task Force."Their concept was you know, let's highlight some of the kids in the community that are going positive things with their life, and really working hard to become better citizens and better examples for our community," says Landecker.That's exactly why artists like Isaiah Brown and Dermario Harris performed today."We're out here just trying to set a little trend you know, stop the violence that's been happening in the city for a long time now," says Brown."That's what it's all about you know, coming off the street, coming in here where everybody can have fun together, not start anything," says Harris.Thousands all across the city will hear some of their songs over the radio. Some performers will also have the chance to showcase their music in recreation centers across Chattanooga."Of the 123 songs that we've gotten, their going to be played on the radio. So these kids are going to get that status, their going get that prestige in a positive way," says Boyd Patterson, Gang Task Coordinator.
