Amnesty: 149 detainees have died in military detention in Nigeria this year

Amnesty International says at least 149 detainees have died in "horrendous" conditions at a military detention centre in north-east Nigeria this year. According to Amnesty's report, 11 of those who died at Giwa barracks were young children, including four babies. The Nigerian army is yet to comment on the latest report, however, in the past it claimed to have set up a human rights department to investigate accusations of abuse. Giwa barracks is located in Maiduguri, an area where authorities are fighting Boko Haram. Amnesty says it has photographs and videos showing the atrocities that take place within the barracks. Some detainees may have died from disease, hunger, dehydration and gunshot wounds. The report calls for the closure of the barracks and all detainees released or transferred to civilian authorities.
