3D reconstruction of an 8-cell embryo of the purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) undergoing its fourth cleavage. The 4 animal-hemisphere cells (up) divide equally, whereas in the four vegetal-hemisphere cells, the spindle is eccentrically positioned, such that these cells divide unequally to yield four micromeres, which are ~1/30 the volume of their sisters, the macromeres. Antibody to tubulin and fluorescent phalloidin label microtubules (gold) and actin filaments associated with the cell membrane (blue). Video courtesy of George von Dassow, University of Oregon.
