Downtown Los Angeles contains the historic center of the city alongside one of the largest concentrations of skyscrapers on the American West Coast. The district combines early 20th-century commercial architecture around Broadway and the Historic Core with Civic Center institutions, modern office towers, cultural landmarks and major transportation infrastructure. Buildings from very different periods stand within a relatively compact area, illustrating the transformation of Los Angeles from a regional city into the center of a vast metropolitan region whose development eventually spread far beyond its original downtown.
