Fisherman鈥檚 Wharf and Pier 39 occupy one of the busiest sections of San Francisco鈥檚 northern waterfront, an area shaped by the city鈥檚 maritime history and its long-established fishing industry. Historic piers, seafood businesses, former industrial buildings, ferries and views across the bay coexist with attractions developed for visitors, while Pier 39 became especially famous for the California sea lions that began gathering on its floating docks after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. From the waterfront, Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate area and the waters of San Francisco Bay form part of one of the city鈥檚 most recognizable landscapes.
