Dog Found Dead in a Cage in Grand Lake St. Mary

GRAND LAKE ST. MARYS -- Authorities are trying to figure out who left a dog in a cage to drown at Grand Lake Saint Marys."I think it's awful," dog owner and nearby resident Carol Sainey  said. "I hope it's an accident. I'd hate to think somebody put a dog in a cage to drown.As Carol Sainey sits and comforts her dog jack, she can't imagine that someone could do something so cruel to an animal."As a dog owner, it's pretty awful," she says.Authorities tell us a boater found the dog Saturday when it floated up after being underwater for a few days."The weight of the dog makes it drown and gases released pull it up," said Auglaize County Dog Warden Russ Bailey.The dog washed up to the top of the lake near Rustic Haven Camp grounds. Bailey says he doesn't know why someone would do something like this, but says he has some suspicion."It's hard to tell," he says. "It could be a lot of reasons. Maybe they couldn't afford it anymore. Maybe it bit someone. People's anger gets in the way."The picture of the deceased dog was to graphic to show, but Bailey wants your help.If you've seen� a white and black� female dog of the pit bull breed weighing about 60 pounds give them a call at 419-302-8303. People who live near the lake say they're keeping a closer eye on their pets tonight."I'm really careful with him just in case he would fall in the lake, but I can't imagine someone putting a dog in the lake," said Sainey.The culprit� could receive anywhere from 2nd degree misdemeanor to 5th degree felony.The dog warden says They identified the name Nicole Thompson on the dog cage.
